Foreign Security Services Increase Efforts to Lure Russians into Terrorism, Says FSB Chief

Law enforcement agencies in Russia have successfully foiled 110 terrorist attacks since the beginning of 2024, according to Alexander Bortnikov, the director of the Federal Security Service (FSB). These attacks, planned by Russian nationals recruited by external forces, aimed to create instability across the country. Over 1,050 individuals have been detained for plotting and committing terrorism-related crimes, as well as promoting and financing terrorism.

At a meeting of the National Anti-Terrorism Committee (NAC) in Moscow, chaired by Bortnikov, it was discussed how to increase the readiness of Russian regions to repel terrorist threats amid the ongoing special military operation in Ukraine. Recent attacks on religious facilities and police officers in Makhachkala and Derbent serve as stark examples of the potential threats faced.

In a separate statement, the NAC highlighted that 45 terrorist cells were suppressed in Russia in 2024, with a focus on preventing terrorist attacks and detaining individuals involved in such activities. The coordinated efforts of law enforcement agencies have been crucial in combating the influence of international terrorist organizations, particularly in regions like the North Caucasus and among migrants from Central Asia.

Alexander Bortnikov also raised concerns about the recruitment activities of foreign intelligence services targeting Russian citizens, especially the youth, to engage in terrorist activities. There is an ongoing effort to create social tension and conflict within Russian society through anti-Russian propaganda campaigns conducted by Western intelligence agencies, increasing the need for vigilance and cooperation among security forces.
