Moscow was infuriated by the NATO war games, which involved 50,000 troops from 29 NATO countries, as well as Sweden and Finland. Finnish authorities noticed disruptions to GPS networks since the beginning of the military exercise and air navigation services issued a warning to all air traffic controllers on Tuesday that a large-scale disruption was affecting the north of the country. Mr Sipilä said: “It is possible that Russia has been the disrupting party in this.

“Russia is known to possess such capabilities.”
Norway also sent out a warning to pilots at the end of October when the operation began.
The military drill, called the Trident Juncture, simulated a Russian invasion of Norway and it was NATO’s largest exercise of its kind in decades.
It involved 65 vessels, 150 aircrafts and 10,000 vehicles aiding the troops.

Russia responded angrily to such a large drill taking place close to its borders.
Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoygu said: “NATO’s military activities near our borders have reached the highest level since the Cold War.”
Mr Shoygu also stated that the drill would be “simulating offensive military action”.
Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said the “escalation of NATO’s military and political activity in the Arctic region, namely the immediate vicinity of Russia and the territory of northern Norway, hasn’t gone unnoticed”.

Finland, which shares an 833-mile border with Russia, has a troubled history with its neighbour, but maintained resolutely neutral during the the Cold War.
Although it has not joined NATO, Finland has grown closer to NATO countries in recent years.
Finland even accused the Kremlin of spying on its Ministry of Foreign Affairs, dredging up data traffic between the country and the EU.
Finnish officials have also echoed other European nations in highlighting an increase in propaganda and fake new stories since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014.
