Isaac Lee had added still more turf to his plate at Univision Communications, taking on oversight of entertainment operations in addition to news and digital.
Lee joined Univision in 2010 as head of news and was upped last November to running all of its digital operations in addition to news. Lee, who is now chief news, entertainment and digital officer for the Spanish-language giant, has led Univision’s push to expand its portfolio with digital media assets including Fusion, the Root, Flama and an investment in humor website the Onion.
Lee’s latest promotion comes as Univision is still looking for a president of entertainment to run programming for its core broadcast network, a role that will report to Lee. Univision’s previous programming chief, Alberto Ciurana, exited in February.
“Univision continues to evolve and drive innovation and I am confident that in this new role Isaac will further align our content and platform teams to strategically drive growth and engagement,†said Univision Communications CEO Randy Falco. “The rapid pace of change in the industry requires us at Univision to continually disrupt the media landscape and I am confident that our leadership team will continue to focus on our mission, on serving our diverse audiences and on leading in the industry.â€
Lee’s ascent comes as Univision has faced ratings declines for some of its primetime telenovela mainstays and tougher competition from its primary Spanish-language rival, NBCUniversal’s Telemundo. The company owned by media mogul Haim Saban and a group of private equity players is still said to be pursuing the IPO that was delayed last year amid a rocky period on Wall Street for media stocks.
On Lee’s watch, Univision has expanded into English-languge media and has diversified the scope of its in-house production. The company earlier this year launched the Storyhouse production venture that is working on new forms of Spanish- and English-language programming for Univision. It also struck a development pact with HBO.
Lee has emphasized that Univision needs to embrace a multicultural and multi-lingual audience to position itself for the future.
“We have successfully transformed Univision into a multimedia industry leader and I look forward to working with our leadership team to further elevate our efforts and compete – and win – across platforms,†Lee said. “No one is better positioned than UCI to super-serve a diverse, rising Americaâ€.
