Stanford moved two NCAA soccer games to Salinas and canceled two basketball games this weekend, due to lingering smoke and deteriorating air quality in the Bay Area.
Friday night’s men’s basketball game against Wofford was canceled, the school announced.
So was Sunday’s women’s basketball game matching No. 7 Stanford and Ohio State.
Neither game will be rescheduled.
Two second-round NCAA women’s soccer games on Friday were moved from Stanford to Rabobank Stadium in Salinas. Wisconsin played Hofstra at 5:30 p.m., and Stanford squared off against Mississippi afterward. The winners, Wisconsin and Stanford, are scheduled to meet in a third-round game Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Stanford’s Cagan Stadium.
The Cardinal men’s soccer team is set to face UC Irvine in a second-round NCAA game Sunday at 5:30 p.m., also at Cagan.
The Stanford games were far from the only sporting events impacted by lingering smoke and poor air quality due to the Camp Fire in Butte County.
Among other developments Friday:
•Across the bay, Cal athletic director Jim Knowlton said he’d decide Sunday morning whether a women’s basketball game against Pacific would tip at 2 p.m. at Haas Pavilion as scheduled, but the team is carrying on as though it will play.
•UC Davis announced Friday that its annual rivalry football game with Sacramento State, the Causeway Classic, will be played at the University of Nevada in Reno on Saturday.
The game was moved because of “uncertainty regarding air quality in Davis,” according to a news release on the school’s athletic website.
Kickoff is set for noon.
•San Jose State’s home game against Nevada, scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturday, was moved up to noon.
•USF’s women’s basketball game against Cal Poly and its men’s basketball game against LIU Brooklyn, both scheduled for Sunday at USF, were moved to Cal State Monterey Bay.
The women will tip off at 2 p.m.; the men’s game is scheduled for 5 p.m. Refunds for the home games are being offered.
•Saturday’s state junior college playoff game between College of San Mateo and Laney was moved to Cabrillo College in Aptos (Santa Cruz County).
Kickoff is 6 p.m.
•Friday’s horse racing at Golden Gate Fields in Albany was canceled. Track officials said they would announce by 8 a.m. Saturday if the day’s program (including the $50,000-added Oakland Stakes) also would be canceled.
•Several high school football, cross country, tennis and water polo matches scheduled for Friday and Saturday were also postponed. (See page B3.)
