This year, the Shrine Bowl will expand to include all-star games featured middle school players.
In addition to the high school game, featuring some of the top public school senior football players in the Carolinas, there will now be two additional games played. The Youth Shrine Bowl will feature a seventh and eighth grade game at UNC Charlotte Dec. 30 plus a sixth grade game at Wofford College on Dec. 16, prior to the 81st annual high school Shrine Bowl event.
The Youth Shrine Bowl game is the brainchild of Fayetteville South View football coach Rodney Brewington. Brewington’s high school team at South View beat West Charlotte 10-7 in the N.C. 4A championship in 1991.
In recent years, the Shrine Bowl has recognized top youth football teams from North and South Carolina during halftime of the all-star games. For the past two years, a Junior Shrine Bowl has been played featuring top sixth graders from both states.
The new youth all-star games expands on that and players will be selected for the games in a similar manner as the high school kids are: coaches can submit names and highlight videos for consideration and there will be five Shrine Bowl combines held for players to try out.
Combines sites/dates: May 13 at York (S.C.) High; May 14 at Rocky River High; May 21 at Ashley Booth Field in Myrtle Beach; June 3 at High Point Central; June 4 at Fayetteville South View.
