Matthew Fitzgerald is busy settling in to his new position as Franklin County public schools’ new technology director.Fitzgerald is replacing George Washington, who retired after serving 19 years as the division’s technology director and 38 years in the field of education.Fitzgerald is a 1995 graduate of Parry McCluer High School in Buena Vista. He graduated from Radford University in 1999 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration in information systems.He joins the school system from the healthcare industry, where he was employed with Friendship Manor in Roanoke. He also has extensive experience managing technology teams in the mining and construction fields.When Fitzgerald first enrolled at Radford, he entered as a finance major but quickly transitioned to information systems upon completing his first computer science class, he said.“I was interested at a very early age and was fortunate to have parents who recognized the importance of technology in my personal development,” Fitzgerald said. “We purchased our first family computer in the mid-80s and not long after that, I was running up the phone bill managing online bulletin boards and chat sessions.”Fitzgerald and his wife, Melanie, who is a 1996 graduate of Franklin County High School, currently reside in Roanoke. He enjoys outdoor activities, including canoeing, mountain biking, hiking and skiing. The couple also enjoys traveling.Fitzgerald said he is excited to join the FCPS team.“The FCPS administrative team has done a great job in building a solid foundation for the use of technology in our school system,” he said. “The district understands the importance of technology in both the instructional and business aspects of the school system and I hope to continue and expand upon these initiatives. It is imperative that we continue to provide our school children with the technology tools and instruction required to enable them to be successful as they move through our school system into higher education and/or the workforce.”
