ALANSON — The 11th Annual Riverfest will return to Alanson this week, bringing five days of family- friendly activities for everyone to enjoy.
The festival was originally started to bring the community of Alanson together to celebrate the historic Inland Waterway that goes through the village.
“It’s quite a historic strip of water,” said Sue Anne Kilgor-Curnow, RiverFest committee chair. “It was use by Native Americans and used to be used for logging and is now used for boating. Eleven years ago we decided to have a festival that celebrates that.”
Although the festival doesn’t officially start until Thursday, the first event will be on Wednesday evening to let people sign up for volunteer shifts.
“We start with our volunteer dinner. We bring all of our volunteers together and have a cookout for them. Anyone that wants to volunteer can come and enjoy the dinner and sign up for shifts,” Kilgor-Curnow said.
According to Kilgor-Curnow, the festival is still in need of volunteers to cover shifts through the weekend.
Aside from the cookout, over the course of the rest of the festival, patrons can expect to see a number of different events including a teen dance, fishing clinics, a lighted boat parade, an arts and crafts flea market, bounce houses, carnival, live entertainment and more.
“The festival has grown every year and each year we keep making it better. This year, we are excited to bring Motown Review to our entertainment tent,” Kilgor-Curnow said.
According to the Alanson Riverfest website, Motown Review features performances by The Original Vandellas, The Contours, Carl Carlton, Freda Payne and Charles Davis and Blue Water Kings.
Other music acts through the course of the festival will include The Blitz, The Country Classics, Rock Bottom and Tom Davis and Vicky Schloendorf.
The 11th annual Alanson Riverfest takes place around the intersection of River Street and U.S. 31 in Alanson.
Most of the events through the festival are free of charge, but the entertainment tent does charge admission.
