Before the Mrs Merton Show, Aherne had written and performed on the BBCâ€™s hit comedy sketch show The Fast Show alongside Paul Whitehouse and Charlie Higson, which ran from 1994 to 1997.
Her death was announced on Saturday afternoon by her publicist Neil Reading, who said in a statement: â€œCaroline Aherne has sadly passed away, after a brave battle with cancer.
"The BAFTA award-winning writer and comedy actor died at her home in Timperley, Greater Manchester.Â She was 52.Â The family ask for privacy at this very sad time.â€
Ralf Little, who played her brother Antony in the Royle Family, said: â€œThing is, amidst all sadness Caroline would now say something grounded, incisive, and hilarious. I canâ€™t think of anything, but she would.â€
