Most area residents are familiar with the local cinema, a four-theater facility that has been in operation for more than 30 years.
Formerly Carmike Cinema 4, the local landmark is now under new management. AMC Theaters has renamed the facility AMC Classic Harlan 4.
According to AMC Classic Harlan 4 General Manager Jennifer Witt, the facility began operations under the new owners in March. She said the change of ownership has been in the works since December.
The day-to-day operations will remain unchanged.
“The prices aren’t going to change,” Witt said.
Witt said that while there are no big changes planned for the theater operations at this time, the new company is planning some improvements to the facility.
“They’re going to do improvements,” Witt said. “We’re getting new carpet, and we’re getting all the lights replaced.”
Witt said some of the older lights may be replaced with LED lighting.
According to www.energystar.gov LED lighting differs from incandescent and compact fluorescent lighting in several ways. When designed well, LED lighting can be more efficient, durable, versatile and longer lasting. LED lighting products use light emitting diodes to produce light very efficiently. An electrical current passes through semiconductor material, which illuminates the tiny light sources we call LEDs.
Witt said Carmike Cinemas operated the facility for several years before AMC Theaters took it over.
While rumors persisted the cinema would be closed, the change in management only resulted in a brief closure.
“We closed for one day,” Witt said. “When they changed the systems over.”
Witt mentioned the cinema will still offer the same sort of movie choices and scheduling, with the summer matinee schedule returning soon.
