A New Fairfield businessman had his Belgian-style pub in Schenectady, N.Y., seized by the New York Department of Taxation because of nearly $700,000 in unpaid sales taxes, the Times-Union of Albany reported.
Owner George S. Collentine, a New Fairfield resident, had his The Bier Abbey bar shut down on Tuesday. He opened it in 2012.
Collentine could not be reached for comment on Thursday.

James Gazzale, a spokesman for the New York tax department, said if Collentine makes an effort to pay back some of the back taxes, he may be able to reopen the pub.
“There are various options an owner can take to reopen,” Gazzale said. “We’ll keep working with him.”
Gazzale said a partial payback may be enough to allow Collentine to reopen the pub, if the “owner has a plan in place.” Resolving these types of issues are taken on a “case-by-case basis,” he said. Gazzale added that his department had been in contact with Collentine long before the seizing of his business.
“Any time we seize a business it’s always the last resort,” Gazzale said. “We communicate with the business owner long before this becomes a reality.”
The state may auction off the business if the taxes are not paid.
The bar featured a large selection of specialty beers, according to the Times-Union. On Tuesday, the locks at the pub were changed and orange “seized” signs were placed on the doors and windows.
