Iran’s foreign minister called the United States “unreliable” on Sunday as President Trump considers withdrawing from a nuclear deal with the country.
“I think what the United States is doing in addition to being unpredictable, which might sometimes work, is proving that it is unreliable,” Javad Zarif said on CNN’s “Fareed Zakaria GPS.”
He said if Trump pulls out of a 2015 deal brokered by former President Obama with Iran then countries around the world would be suspect of Trump’s intentions during other negotiations.
“What is important for the international community is to be able to rely on the words of the United States as a negotiation partner,” Zarif said. “If the world cannot rely on the words of the United States as a negotiating partner, then nobody will negotiate with the United States because they know that the United State at the end of the day will use this famous expression ‘What’s mine is mine and what’s yours is negotiable.'”
During a speech before the United Nations General Assembly last week, Trump ripped the accord as “one of the worst and most one-sided transactions” entered into by the United States and suggested he would not sign off again on the deal when it comes up for recertification on Oct. 15.
