We are entering a new era in Overwatch, as in year two, the game’s events will start to repeat themselves and become annual, which is what we’re seeing today with Summer Games 2017.
The original event last year was tied to the Summer Olympics, but even though those have come and gone, an athletic-themed Overwatch event remains, and with it come new skins and prizes buried in loot boxes.
There was only one tiny leak ahead of today’s even, a brief glimpse of what appears to be a Mercy skin based on the Greek goddess Nike, which was posted by a Chinese site. But the rest of the skins have remained under wraps until now. (Update: literally as I write this, skins have been leaking out all over the place in the last hour).
As is tradition, I will be buying and opening 100 loot boxes on day one here so you can see what that kind of investment is likely to get you. This time, however, my pulls should be different, given that this is the first event where Overwatch has instituted their “fewer duplicates” system. Unlike Hearthstone which has banned Legendary duplicates altogether, Overwatch has just greatly reduced the odds of getting a repeat item, a system that has been tested with regular loot boxes before this.
This is good news for the Summer Games event especially, because the old Tracer, Zarya and Lucio skins from last year are also in the loot pool, and I would be bummed to get those multiple times when there are new skins to find. I’m not quite sure how many new Legendary skins there are going into this, but there were eleven in the Anniversary event, so I’m guessing at the very least, there are way more than last year.
Shall we? Here we go.
(some time passes)
Alright, here’s what I got. Wow:
Sprays – 15
Voice Lines – 37
Icons – 36
Victory Poses – 17
Emotes – 2
Highlight Intros – 8
Summer Games 2017 Legendary Skins – 7, 1x Soldier 76, 1x Sombra, 1x Widowmaker, 1x McCree, 1x Junkrant, 1x Reaper, 1x Mercy
Old Summer Games Legendary Skins – 1, 1x Zarya
Old Summer Games Epic Skins – 7
Old Legendary Skins – 4
Gold Piles - 3
Gold from duplicates – 5,800
Thank god for this new no-duplicate era.
I got them all. In 100 boxes, I got all seven of the new Summer Games Legendary skins with zero duplicates, the one I missed from last year (one of the Zarya recolors) and four base game skins that were also not duplicates. This is the first time I have ever gotten all the Legendaries in one of these box openings, and I have 5,800 extra gold on top of it all.
This system is infinitely more rewarding than the way things used to work, and I have to believe fans are going to respond well to it. I love this change, and hope it’s never reversed. Finally, loot boxes feel worth the time or money you spend to get them.
As for the skins? I might do a full ranking order later, but the most sought-after will surely be shirtless McCree and bikini Widowmaker, though Mercy’s Nike skin is great, and Soldier’s dad skin is hilarious. Not as much a fan of the Reaper/Junkrat skins. I'm still trying to figure out what Sombra's is supposed to be.
The only duplicates I got were epics from last year’s Summer Games, the recolors for the different countries. And then just some icons and sprays, but even those, for the most part, were not duplicates, and I’m really starting to fill in my missing items from both Summer Games and the base game. As I said, this new system is great.
If you’re hesitant about spending money or grinding for boxes, I’m here to tell you that this new system makes it worthwhile if you love collecting skins like I do. You can’t really do better than zero Legendary duplicates, and I applaud Blizzard for this move.
