NOME, Alaska (KTUU) He came in third place in the 2017 Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. A career high for up-and-coming Girdwood musher Nic Petit. But what the race results don't show is that Petit could conceivably have won second, and more prize money, had he chosen to be a bad sport.

Upon finishing in Nome, Petit was thanked under the burled arch by second-place finisher Dallas Seavey. (See the video above.) It seems Seavey had left his vet book - a mandatory piece of equipment for mushers finishing the race - and Petit found it and returned it.
"I picked up his vet book from Safety," Petit said after crossing the finish line just 4 minutes and 42 seconds behind Seavey.
It's unclear if Seavey would have really been disqualified or otherwise penalized for not having the required gear, but race rules clearly list the veterinary book as a mandatory item mushers must have in the front of their sled "at all times" under Iditarod rule No. 16.

This year, the second-place musher wins $59,637. The third-place finisher? $4,775 less.
"Well, when we talk who will get the sportsmanship award, don't forget my name," Petit told Seavey at the finish line, drawing laughs from the crowd.
Petit said he sees a bright future ahead for his team. He may be a good sport, but he's still competitive.
"I feel like I got a heck of a dog team. Watch out Seaveys, we are going to get you," he said.
