If you've been dying to try out Oculus Rift, but don't have an extra $600 lying around to buy one of your own, now's your chance! NYC's first virtual reality cinema, Jump Into the Light, is now open on St. Mark's, where you can view 360-degree films, play around on Oculus Rift or even be 3D-scanned yourself, so you too can exist on the internet.
The cinema (12 St. Mark's Place) experience is open every Friday from 6–10pm, and you can buy tickets ($35, but there's a $10-off code on the site now) to check everything out for an hour at a time. The founder of the company, Michael Deathless, says, "Most of the people that come here are like, Oh my god, I can't believe this." Deathless' company creates 360-degree videos and programming, and you can check out some of their finished products here. At the cinema, you can watch horror, comedy and documentary films, and take the "ultimate selfie," where your entire body is scanned from top to bottom to create a 3D character that you can share on social media. You can also use a Google Tilt Brush on HTC Vive to paint in midair and create a world around you of your choosing. If you're in it for the gaming, you can play several of them on Oculus Rift and see what all the fuss is about (no VR sex to be found here... yet).
If you check it out, tweet us @timeoutnewyork and tell us about your experience! And check out other places to play all over the city.
