April showers bring May flowers, or so the saying goes. Either way, April is on its way out. May is the new top dog in town, beckoning warmly to us as it paves the way toward summertime.
As always, a new month means a new month of free Xbox One and Xbox 360 games.
There's actually a couple really, really good ones this month, too, especially since we're talking about the ultra-low price of 'free' (well, if you have an Xbox Live Gold subscription that is.)
I've been including the Metacritic scores in these posts for the past few months because I think it provides a really helpful snapshot of whether these are worth downloading, and I have to say this might be the best month ever for Games With Gold. A lot of months come with some pretty low-scoring titles, but this month not a single one is under 80% and one is at 95%! That's incredible. (Granted, one game is releasing on May 1st, but it's the sequel to a game that had over 80% on Metacritic, so that's a good sign.)
It's a good month to be an Xbox gamer, even if Microsoft is still dropping the ball on new exclusive content.
Here's what's coming to Xbox 'Games With Gold' on Xbox One and Xbox 360 this May.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (95% on Metacritic) May 16th - June 15th
Super Mega Baseball 2 (No Metacritic score yet) May 1st - May 31st
Xbox 360 (both games backwards compatible on Xbox One)
Sega Vintage Collection: Streets of Rage (84% on Metacritic) May 1st - May 15th
Vanquish (84% on Metacritic) May 16th - May 31st
That's a whole bunch of Sega for Xbox gamers in March. Vanquish was recently released on PC and I had some fun playing it. It's very fast! It's also a Platinum title, and they make some of the best action games in the industry.
The big draw here, of course, is MGSV: The Phantom Pain. That's not a perfect game, by any means, and it's surrounded by controversy over Konami's handling of the Hideo Kojima situation, but it's still a ton of fun. It's a solid stealth/action title and you simply can't not download it when it's free!
I don't play baseball games so if any readers played the original do let me know how it was. All told, a great month for Games With Gold.
There's still time to download most of April's excellent free Games With Gold also. Like May, it was a surprisingly good month with a bunch of really quality games to choose from.
