The Grand Cinema will close next month for a $3 million renovation that will add recliners, a new concession area and a bar to the theater selling beer, wine and daiquiris.Another proposed phase eventually will add bowling, laser tag and a rope obstacle course. The theater at 15365 George O'Neal Road will close shortly after the start of the school year, said Roger Black, project manager for the Morrison Companies, which owns the facility. When the eight-screen theater reopens in early November, it will be rebranded as a Celebrity Theatre, the same name as its sister facilities in Broussard and Ruston.
"This theater is located in a very highly populated area and we want to offer the community a facility that the area can enjoy and be proud of," Black said. Plans are to "completely renovate" the building, which was completed in 1993. All of the seats will be replaced with luxury recliners, and new carpet, drapes and wallpaper will be installed. The restrooms will be renovated. The lobby will be expanded and new video games, which allow players to earn points they can redeem for prizes, will be installed. A new concession area, with Coca-Cola Freestyle and frozen beverage machines, will be put in, along with a small bar selling beer, wine and daiquiris.

Recliner seating and alcohol sales have become a trend at local theaters. The two Movie Tavern locations in Citiplace and Juban Crossing sell beer, wine and cocktails that moviegoers can order from their reclining seats. A bar recently opened in the AMC Mall of Louisiana 15, and Cinemark Perkins Rowe started a $2.4 million renovation this spring that involves replacing all of the seats with luxury leather recliners.

The renovation is the first step in a larger plan to turn Celebrity Theatre to even more of a family entertainment venue. Black said an addition will be made to the theater, which will nearly double the size of the building and be home for a bowling alley, laser tag and a rope obstacle course. A kitchen and private party rooms also will be added. The addition is still in the planning and drawing phases. While it's too early to give an exact timeline, Black said his hope is to open the entertainment center in summer 2017.
