Michigan State's 2016-17 non-conference basketball is highlighted by known matchups against heavy hitters. There's a meeting with Arizona in Hawaii. There's a game against Kentucky in New York City and a showdown at Duke. There are three games in the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas.
The rest of the schedule, meanwhile, is nearly done being fleshed out.
According to scheduling agreements obtained by MLive, the Spartans will play guarantee games against Mississippi Valley State (Nov. 18), Oral Roberts (Dec. 3), Youngstown State (Dec. 7) and Tennessee Tech (Dec. 10).
The Spartans will also host the return game of a home-and-home agreement with Northeastern on Dec. 18 at Breslin Center, along with a previously announced home game against Oakland on Dec. 21.
All that remains for the Spartans' finalized 2016-17 non-league schedule is an on-campus game as part of the Battle 4 Atlantis. Because the event is a multi-team exempt tournament, teams play one game on campus in order to push their schedules to the NCAA-allowed maximum of 31 games.
The date and opponent for the Battle 4 Atlantis on-campus game should be confirmed shortly.
In the remainder of the Battle 4 Atlantis, Michigan State will open against St. John's and face either Baylor or VCU in the second-round game. The opposite side of the bracket includes Wichita State, LSU, Old Dominion and Lousiville.
For the four guarantee games, Michigan State will pay between $85,000-$95,000 apiece to Tennessee Tech, Oral Roberts, Mississippi Valley State and Youngstown State, according to the contracts.
Tennessee Tech, coached by Steve Payne, finished with a solid RPI of 134 a year ago and played in the Vegas 16 postseason tournament, closing with a 19-12 record. The Spartans are 2-0 all-time against the Golden Eagles.
Oral Roberts finished 14-17 a year ago, its first losing season since 2001 under head coach Scott Sutton, the son of Hall of Fame coach Eddie Sutton. MSU and ORU have never met.
Youngstown State, coached by Jerry Slocum, posted an 11-21 record and finished seventh in the Horizon League with a 6-12 mark. The programs have met once -- an MSU victory in 2006.
Mississippi Valley State ended last season, its second under coach Andre Payne, with an RPI of 330 and an 8-27 record. Michigan State previously faced MVSU once in 1999, winning easily.
