Special elections to fill the seat of former state Sen. Bert Johnson, who faces up to a year in prison for conspiring to steal money, will take place during Michigan's regular primary and general elections this year, Gov. Rick Snyder's office announced Monday.
The state will hold an Aug. 7 primary and Nov. 6 election this year.
Johnson, a Democrat from Highland Park, was charged last year with putting a no-show employee on his office payroll to repay $14,000 in personal loans. He pleaded guilty March 2 and resigned from office.
"The timing of this special election gives residents of the 2nd District an appropriate amount of time to research and decide on who their senator should be while reducing the financial burden on taxpayers for the cost," Snyder said in the release.
The filing deadline for the primary is April 24.
The congressional seat of longtime U.S. Rep. John Conyers, who resigned last year amid sexual harassment allegations, is also up for grabs in a special election to coincide with this year's regular elections.
