MAYOR
Christine Maefsky

Christine MaefskyAge: 73

What qualifies you to hold this position? I have been Mayor of Scandia since January 2017. Before that I served on the Scandia Planning Commission for 10 years, 6 years as its Chair. I have considerable experience in education (31 years teaching in the Minneapolis Public Schools), business (commercial dairy goat farm co-owner since 1972), and civic volunteer activities.
What would your top priorities be if elected? Certainly, the greatest issue of citizen concern in Scandia right now is the need for fast, reliable internet access citywide. Reliable service for business, personal, and educational purposes is key to growth. Also important is continuing my first term initiatives to build community by connecting citizens to the City and to each other.
What do you think is the primary role of government? Delivering services by establishing and enforcing laws that are respectful of individual landowners, neighbors, and the city as a whole: land use, safe roads, environmental protection, other public services. Arbitrating conflicts. Establishing and maintaining a community where people feel connected to the place where they live and to each other.

COUNCIL MEMBER AT LARGE
Jerry Cusick

Jerry CusickAge: 59

What qualifies you to hold this position? I have been a Scandia resident for over 31 years and have recently retired from a 32 year career in a governmental agency. Much of that time has been spent as a manager/supervisor with experience in budgeting, training, staffing and equipment. Also building relationships with other agencies to address current and future events and issues.
What would your top priorities be if elected? To maintain and protect Scandia’s rural character. The majority of residents have acknowledged this through surveys and it is well laid out in the 2040 comprehensive plan. I will also resist unreasonable attempts to restrict the activities that Scandia residents currently enjoy. We may be a “city” but are really largely 40 square miles or rural.
What do you think is the primary role of government? To govern the affairs that affect a defined area and its’ people in a reasonable and responsible manner. Not to stand in the way of lawful activities or progress unless detrimental to the health, safety or quality of life of the people and the areas natural resources.

Patti Ray

Patti RayAge: 64

What qualifies you to hold this position? I have lived in Scandia for 36 years and am currently a local small business owner. I have experience as a project manager, national sales manager, president, and chief financial officer in my business career. I also grew up in a family of 14 children, so I know how to work as a team.
What would your top priorities be if elected? High-speed Internet is a digital highway that brings jobs and education into a community. Many homes in Scandia have very slow, unreliable Internet. This is stalling Scandia’s growth and keeping our residents from participating in the digital economy. I will work to find cost effective solutions.
What do you think is the primary role of government? Primary role of government is to build a good foundation in which a community can thrive. This includes good roads, excellent schools, high-speed Internet, and protected natural spaces for all. It is also the government’s role to find rational solutions to complex problems for its citizens.

What qualifies you to hold this position? I have served 5 years on the Scandia Planning Commission, 2 years as chairperson and 1 year as vice chair. I also previously served on the planning commission in Oak Park Heights. I am also involved in local government in my day job as an assessor.
What would your top priorities be if elected? My top priorities are better access to high-speed Internet for all of Scandia, properly managing growth and development, protecting water resources, and encouraging a happy and healthy community while maintaining fiscal discipline.
What do you think is the primary role of government? The primary role of government is to create an environment where all citizens have the opportunity to thrive and live peacefully while defending against forces that would limit such opportunity.
