If you’re someone who has gone from a life of gluttony and laziness to one of healthier living, you may have noticed that some of your friends aren’t completely supportive of your new lifestyle.
Truth is, the road to a healthy life is one that not all are brave enough to travel. And those who aren’t ready to walk that path themselves may try to prevent you from moving full speed ahead.
Listed below are some phrases you may hear from some friends and family when you decide to make fitness and healthy eating priorities:
What they say: “Do you have to go to the gym again today?” What they mean: “I have a gym membership that I haven’t used in three months. Seeing you go every day makes me feel guilty.”
How you should respond: “No, I don’t have to go to the gym; I want to go. Working out is good for me physically and emotionally. After a workout, I feel a sense of accomplishment. Maybe you should try using your membership.”
What they say: “We’re all drinking tonight. You should drink with us.” What they mean: “We don’t have your willpower, and seeing you be so dedicated makes us feel bad about ourselves.”
How you should respond: “I would love to hang out with you guys tonight and have a good time. I don’t have to drink to do that.”
What they say: “We’re all eating junk food. You should eat junk food too.” What they mean: See above.
How you should respond: “Eating crappy food makes me feel lousy. I’d love to eat with you. How about I order what I want to eat, and you order what you want?”
What they say: “You’re looking too muscular (or too skinny).” What they mean: “Wow, you have the body of someone 10 or 20 years younger, but I’m flabby and out of shape.”
How you should respond: “Thank you! I’ve been working really hard in the gym and I’ve been very dedicated with my nutrition. It’s great to know that the hard work is paying off.”
What they say: “I’ve heard that drinking all those protein shakes and taking all those vitamins is dangerous.” What they mean: “Those shakes and vitamins seem like they’re really helping you, but I’m not ready to make those changes in my life.”
How you should respond: “I’ll take my protein shakes over your fast food and sodas any day.”
What they say: “Would it kill you to have a cookie?” What they mean: “I want a cookie.”
How you should respond: “No, it wouldn’t kill me, but what do you care whether or not I have a cookie? If you want a cookie, have one. I don’t.”
What they say: “When will you over this ‘getting healthy’ phase?” What they mean: “I like the way things used to be when we were both fat and out of shape together, and I’m afraid I’m losing you.”
How you should respond: “You’re my friend and I hope you always will be. But this is not a phase. I want to be fit for the rest of my life. If you’re ever interested in being more fit, I’d be happy to help you on that journey. If you don’t, that’s fine. I won’t judge you and we can still be friends. But this is what I want. So please support me because this is an important part of my life now”
If your friends can’t support your effort to live a better life, then they really aren’t your friends.
