Carpenter makes it six straight games with a HR

July 22,2018 03:10

In the history of Major League Baseball, only 28 players (a total of 31 times) have homered in six straight games. The MLB record for consecutive games with a homer is eight, done by three players: Ken Griffey Jr. (Mariners, July 20-28, 1993), Don ...

CHICAGO -- On the heels of one of the best individual performances in franchise history, Matt Carpenter elbowed his way into the franchise record books again on Saturday with home runs in both ends of a doubleheader at Wrigley Field.
After hitting a solo homer in the Cardinals' 7-2 loss, Carpenter entered as part of a sixth-inning double switch and promptly homered in his first at-bat of the 6-3 win in the nightcap. With a home run in each of his last six games, Carpenter joins Mark McGwire as the only players in franchise history to go deep in that many consecutive games.

Carpenter is the lone Cardinal to do so in a single season and the only player in the Majors to achieve the feat this year. Giancarlo Stanton went deep in six straight games last August for Miami.
• Most consecutive games with a home run
McGwire homered in the final two games of '97 and then opened his historic 70-homer season in '98 with blasts in his first four games.
In the history of Major League Baseball, only 28 players (a total of 31 times) have homered in six straight games. The MLB record for consecutive games with a homer is eight, done by three players: Ken Griffey Jr. (Mariners, July 20-28, 1993), Don Mattingly (Yankees, July 8-18, 1987) and Dale Long (Pirates, May 19-28, 1956).
Each of Carpenter's last 12 hits have been for extra bases. That, too, is a Cardinals record.
Carpenter has homered eight times in total during this torrid stretch, including six times during the Cardinals' first four games of this series. No player in Major League history had previously homered that many times in a single series at Wrigley Field. Three of Carpenter's series homers came on Friday, when he became the second player ever to have a three-homer, two-double game.

"Carpenter is on a different level right now," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said on Saturday. "He's Daniel Murphy-esque right now. Give him credit. He looks that good."
Murphy, of course, hit .529 with four homers to push the Mets past the Cubs in the 2015 National League Championship Series. Carpenter has eight homers in 12 games against the Cubs this year.
"You talk about locked in. That's what it looks like," said Cardinals interim manager Mike Shildt. "Glad he plays for us."
Carpenter's feat had an added degree of difficulty, too, as the wind was whipping in from center field for most of the day. Several players had balls die on the warning track -- including a first-inning laser by Harrison Bader that, based on its exit velocity and launch angle, is a home run 92 percent of the time.
"It was tough weather conditions to hit the ball out," Maddon said, "unless your last name is Carpenter."
