To understand a little about Sarah Penrod, consider her recipe for Black Gold: two shots of espresso drowned into a cup of strong black tea.
It’s the turbo-charged rocket fuel that powered the already high-octane Dallas-area native through authoring her first cookbook, “Urban Cowgirl: Decadently Southern, Outrageously Texan, Food, Family Traditions and Style for Modern Life.”
The title is equal parts compendium of tried-and-true Texas recipes and a handbook to life. Chicken enchiladas on one page, advice on throwing a Southern-style tea party on the next.
“Urban Cowgirl” is a 300-page handbook to the Urban Cowgirl lifestyle, which Penrod has become known for through her work as a personal chef and contestant on season 10 of “Food Network Star.”
“It feels like I had a baby,” Penrod said of the publishing process. “In my mind, I started to write the book almost as a 101 on how to be Texan. I just wanted to cover all the facets of my life.”
Penrod is no stranger to San Antonio. She worked as a personal chef for Spurs point guard Tony Parker and his then-wife Eva Longoria. She now cooks for Dallas Stars standout Tyler Seguin, but still raves about the cobbler at local institution Texas Pride Barbecue.
“San Antonio isn’t my hometown, but it is where I got my big break,” Penrod said.
Penrod, 34, is hopeful her book will become an heirloom resource to future generations of Texans. She’s received positive feedback from a wide range of readers, including moms who appreciate her baby food recipes and a competition barbecue cook who won an award with one of her dishes.
“This is the first time I’ve had enough life experience to produce something to share with other people,” Penrod said. “I think its going to be very useful to people who want to learn more about Texan cuisine.”
