An annual summer pilgrimage for prep coaches across the state of Mississippi takes place this week.
The 61st annual Mississippi Association of Coaches Multi Sports Clinic takes place at the Hilton Hotel in Jackson, beginning Wednesday. The event, which is sponsored this year by the Mississippi Department of Health-Office of Tobacco Control, is expected to attract upwards of 700 coaches in different types of sports.
"We enjoy attending the clinic as a staff and sharing ideas with other coaches," Pascagoula head football coach Lewis Sims said, recently. "There's a lot of networking that goes on and always something new to learn that is helpful to coaches as well."
Coaches from all across South Mississippi will make the trek to the Capital City, including many from Jackson and George Counties.
There are sessions on everything from archery to tennis and swimming and bowling on the agenda, in addition to the bigger sports like football, baseball, basketball, track and field, softball, soccer and volleyball. Cheer, tennis, powerlifting and motivation sessions will also take place.
Among the more notable speakers this year are the head football coaches from Mississippi's "Big Three" universities; Mississippi State's Dan Mullen, Southern Mississippi's Jay Hopson and Hugh Freeze of Ole Miss.
In basketball, Delta State head mens coach Jim Boone and Jackson State head mens coach Wayne Brent are set to speak along with USM head women basketball coach Joye Lee McNelis.
On the baseball side, University of Arkansas-Little Rock head coach Chris Curry will peak, as will University of Lousiana-Lafayette head coach Tony Robichaux and Delta State head coach Mike Kinnison.
LSU head softball coach Beth Torina, Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges Athletics Director Jim Southward and Mississippi State head track and field coach David McFatrich are some of the other notable speakers included in this year clinic.
In addition, Mitch Williams, the Multi Area Director of The Fellowship of Christian Athletes for Southeast Mississippi will speak as well. He just recently was the key note speaker at the 2016 Pascagoula Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
Numerous vendors displaying the latest in athletic technology will be on hand as well.
The annual three day affair wraps up Wednesday. In addition to the three full days of sessions, a golf tournament will kick off things off Tuesday afternoon at Lake Caroline Country Club. In addition, the MAC All-Star Volleyball games will take place Wednesday night at Millsaps College.
